CASE STUDIES AND CASE STUDY REVIEW PROCESS
The following information is also available on the Certification page. It is the requirement that people tend to have the most questions about, so for your convenience, I’ve featured this on a page all its own.
EFT International requires four Case Studies according to the EFT International guidelines plus possible additional demonstration of competencies per individual assessment by mentor. A recorded session (audio or video) is required as one of the case studies.
It is recommended that you get started with these early in the certification process. Once you submit one case study, I will review it carefully and provide feedback in our Case Study Review, and you can incorporate what you learn into your next case study. If any core skills seem to be missing or need more practice, you will have time to remedy the situation before your final case study. Here are three things to note:
- Two Case Studies are detailed written reports of your work with a client. Each should show your work with the client preferably over the course of several sessions with that person. Most people include two sessions: one session and the follow-up session after it. I hope it is clear that in these written reports, one Case Study is on one individual; the other on a different individual. The Guidelines documents provide a checklist of what to include and examples.
- One Case Study is a detailed written personal report of how you’ve successfully used EFT for your own issue. This can involve one or more sessions.
- Your fourth Case Study is a recorded session. If you have questions about how to record and how to get the recording to me, let’s talk — it’s quite simple but may be different for each person depending on the technology you use. If you do the session on Zoom, it is easy to record the video and send the link. Please keep the recorded session reasonable in length — usually 45 min. to an hour is good. After you send me the recorded session, I go through it and take notes; then we plan for about an hour by phone to discuss the session. I prefer a video recording but an audio can be acceptable if necessary.
A NOTE ON DETAIL AND LENGTH: Please notice the amount of detail in the example case studies. I would suggest that 10-15 double-spaced pages is a good guideline for each written case study. If your studies are not detailed and extensive enough, they will need to be re-done. However, remember that we will be going over them line-by-line. So excessively long case studies are problematic as well. Edit and summarize appropriately.
A NOTE ABOUT THE PERSONAL MENTORING FOR THE CASE STUDY REVIEWS: I give each candidate 4-6 hours of personal one-on-one time for our case study reviews. I often spend another two hours on the recorded session before we meet to talk about it. Please keep this in mind as you prepare your written studies and your recording so that they are of high quality and are well within the guidelines above.
CASE STUDY GUIDELINES AND EXAMPLES:
Please consult the documents below that will help you know how to proceed.
EFT International Case Study Guidelines Manual– this document extensively explains the case studies and includes full-length examples.
Betty’s Case Study Guidelines – these are consistent with the EFT International requirements and give you a briefer version as a framework for how to proceed
EFT Foundational Skills and Concepts Review Sheet – no one session will include everything! But this is a good review of all the skills you might use, material which is taught in Level 1-2.
Sample Case Studies
Here are two sample case studies for which the students got the client’s permission for sharing. No case study is perfect and there were suggestions for improvement — but these are good examples of how specific to be in your write-up. (You will probably recognize these, as I posted them as part of the modules — worth a review as you work on your case studies.)
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: At the time the first two were written, we were not requiring that each Case Study include more than one session. According to current requirements, these would have included a follow-up session, whether there is more to do on the original issue or whether the next session involves moving on to something else. Also, the first one does not include the Self-Assessment at the end, which is now required. But these are still valuable to show you the structure and the level of detail. The third, a sample Self Case Study, follows current guidelines and is an excellent example.
